From Applicant To Candidate

This photo (KEYSTONE/Dominic Favre) is taken in front of the IOC headquarters in Lausanne. The teams of the 3 applicant cities Annecy (France), Pyeongchang (South Korea) and Munich (Germany) as well as innumerable representatives of the media gather here today to mark an important milestone. Today everybody awaits the outcome of the decision of the IOC executive board about who will be elevated from applicant city to candidate status. Of course we are a little bit nervous until it is announced that all 3 applicants made it into the next round.

We took a crucial step and our team is extremely happy and especially proud about the very positive assessment of the Munich concept. But the real work starts now and I hope that the excitement of the German people about the Soccer World Cup in South Africa and the support for our young and passionate soccer team will carry on throughout our candidate year.

The final decision will be made by the IOC members on July 6th 2011 in Durban. We will give everything and with a little luck they will announce: "The host of the XXIII. Olympic Winter Games will be…"
